Weekly Signals
In the autumn of 2003, Nathan Callahan and Mike Kaspar created the first episodes of Weekly Signals — a news and interviews radio program broadcasting Tuesday mornings from the University of California at Irvine on KUCI 88.9 FM. Until the winter of 2009, the show included Callahan and Kaspar's take on the news of the week in a segment called Weekly Review followed by a talk with one of the world's most fascinating people. Included on the guest list were Seymour Hersh, Barbara Ehrenreich, Arianna Huffington, Joseph Wilson, Daniel Ellsberg, Errol Morris, Garrison Keillor, Helen Thomas, John Sayles, Lewis Lapham, Philip Glass, Frederick Wiseman, Thomas Frank, Paul Krugman, Terry Jones, Susan Jacoby, Chalmers Johnson, Haskell Wexler, Robert Fisk, Anne Lamott, and George McGovern. In the Winter of 2010, Weekly Signals moved from Tuesdays at 8 am to Fridays at 8 am. From March to October 2010, the Weekly Review segment was replaced by Time Out — a single topic audio diary. In June of 2010, Nathan Callahan began The SoCal Byte, a series of audio essays. In October of 2010, Weekly Signals Weekly Review was reintroduced with Mahler the Wonder Dog. In July 0f 2024, Nathan took over the reins of the program. Mike Kaspar can still be heard on KUCI's Filmschool Radio. Mahler can be heard barking in KUCI's backyard.
